FIRST

what is first?

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization founded by innovative entrepreneur Dean Kamen, who wishes to offer youth an appreciation for the wonders of science and technology. Since its establishment in New Hampshire in 1989, FIRST has been a helpful non-profit charity organization, providing young teenagers with opportunities to tackle new projects. What started as 28 teams competing in a high school gym has gradually evolved into over 150,000 members participating annually.

For high schoolers, FIRST hosts annual robotics competitions, a varsity activity where teams from high schools all over the country (some out of country too) work to build a robot within 45 days that can successfully maneuver or play a specified game for that year in any way. Winning does not necessarily come in the form of medals for FIRST competitions; rather, it comes from overcoming obstacles, thinking outside the box, practicing gracious professionalism, and meeting new friends through alliances. These are the real prizes people take home from FIRST competitions.
